Personal support workers are a vital part of providing the kind of quality, long-term care that Canada’s aging population deserves. It’s no wonder that demand for dedicated and compassionate people willing to take on the role of a personal support worker is only increasing.
As part of the province’s Long-Term Care Staffing Plan, the Government of Ontario is investing $86 million into the training of new PSWs to ensure the future of the long-term care industry. This investment will help train 8,000 new personal support workers through the programs offered in Ontario’s private career college network.
What kind of financial assistance is the Ontario government offering?
New students enrolling in personal support worker programs at an OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) approved private career college may have up to $13,235 in tuition, books and other mandatory fees covered. This also includes a stipend for clinical work placement in long-term care homes and community care environments.
Eligibility for financial assistance from the Government of Ontario requires students to begin their training as a personal support worker between May 1and July 31, 2021.

“Personal support workers are the backbone of long-term care. This is rewarding and meaningful work,” said Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, Minister of Long-Term Care. “This is a one-time bursary and a one-time opportunity. We want to create opportunities for everybody, as LTC deserves more staff, and our loved ones need more care.”
If you’re thinking about becoming a personal support worker, now’s the time.
