4 Steps to Becoming a Personal Support Worker

If you’re considering a career as a personal support worker, you’re probably wondering where to start. You’ve got questions, and maybe a few concerns, and that’s okay. What matters is that you take action, and the Academy of Learning Career College is here to help.

Let’s get you started on the path to becoming a personal support worker.

1. Make the choice to become a PSW.

It may sound obvious, but first you need to decide that being a PSW is for you.

Do you enjoy helping family and friends? Are you sympathetic to the plights of strangers?  Do you find satisfaction in a job well done? If you answered yes to those questions, then you already know that personal support work is the right career for you.

Don’t be afraid to reach out to anyone working as a PSW, too. They’ll tell you it’s challenging work, but that assisting others is one of the most fulfilling things you can do.

2. Register for the Personal Support Worker course at Albion College.

Your next step is contacting us for more information on enrolling in your personal support worker course online. We’ll get in touch to set up an interview, take you on a campus tour, and talk about financial aid or any other questions you have.

One of the advantages of studying with the AOLCC is that you’ll be able to select a start date that works for you. And from there, you’ll develop a plan for your education and training that best fits your schedule.

3. Pursue your studies and work placement.

Personal support work covers a wide range of duties, and your studies will help you develop the basic nursing and social service skills needed to be successful.

You’ll learn to recognize and deal with abuse, manage medication and physical exams, assist with mobility and daily tasks, administer first aid, and more. And once your studies are complete, a site placement will help you hone your new skillset as a full-fledged PSW.

4. Become the PSW you want to be.

You made the choice, you pursued the education, and now you have the skills you need to become a personal support worker. Now it’s time to choose what kind of personal support work is for you.

There’s no shortage of places in need of PSWs, including retirement communities, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospitals, and even seniors still living at home.

And just like when you were deciding to become a PSW, don’t be afraid to reach out to your connections. They can offer advice, support, and even a direct line to your first (or next) placement.

Enroll in the Personal Support Worker program at AOLCC and be job-ready in less than a year.
